50,000 Autonomous FPV Drones from Auterion and Skyfall Headed to Ukrainian Front

American company Auterion and Ukrainian firm Skyfall have signed a deal to supply the Ukrainian army with 50,000 Shrike-model FPV drones fitted with the Skynode S autonomy module. This marks double the scale of Auterion's previous contract, which stood at roughly 40,000 units, with actual deliveries already underway this week.

A deal that doubles the previous scale

Auterion, a US software company specializing in autonomy systems for military drones, previously supplied Ukrainian forces with batches totaling around 40,000 units. The new deal with Skyfall breaks that record and doubles it, underscoring just how fast demand is growing for FPV drones capable of autonomously locking onto battlefield targets in Ukraine.

At the heart of the deal is the pairing of Skyfall's Shrike platform, built by the Ukrainian FPV drone manufacturer, with Auterion's Skynode S module, which handles real-time image processing and locks onto moving targets without constant reliance on communication with the operator.

Is swarm capability coming in a future software update?

Beyond the hardware delivery, Auterion is planning a future software update that will add swarm coordination capabilities to the Shrike, meaning coordinated operation among multiple drones simultaneously targeting the same objective or operational area. This upgrade requires no hardware changes, meaning it can be rolled out across all units already delivered once it's ready.

Does combat footage include a helicopter and a TOS-1A?

Skyfall reports that the Shrike has already been tested in combat and has documented strikes on high-value Russian assets. Among the targets reportedly destroyed are an Mi-8 transport helicopter and a TOS-1A, a heavy Russian thermobaric rocket-based flamethrower system. If these reports are accurate, they represent a significant demonstration of operational capability for a small, relatively inexpensive FPV drone against far costlier platforms.

The open question: how well does autonomy hold up against electronic warfare?

The Russian-Ukrainian front has become the world's densest military testing ground for FPV drones, precisely because both sides are simultaneously advancing their communications-jamming systems. Skynode S's ability to lock onto a target and keep attacking even when the link to the operator's controller is severed is a direct answer to that problem, but a rollout of 50,000 units does not by itself prove consistent effectiveness against a Russian jamming network that updates itself almost weekly. How the new fleet will hold up against the next generation of Russian countermeasures remains an open question until more field data accumulates.
