Elbit Proposes Turning Commercial Ships Into Floating Drone Carriers

Elbit Systems has presented a concept for converting commercial ships into floating deployment bases for unmanned aircraft, built around the Hermes 650 Spark maritime drone. Each platform would be able to carry between nine and twelve aircraft, with the goal of giving the Israeli Navy extended maritime reach at a fraction of the cost of buying an aircraft carrier.

Instead of an aircraft carrier, a container full of drones

Elbit's core idea is fairly simple: take an existing commercial vessel, one that would be sailing the seas anyway, and fit it with launch and operating infrastructure for maritime drones. Rather than sinking billions of dollars into building and maintaining an aircraft carrier over decades, the navy would gain a mobile aerial foothold at a much lower cost. The Hermes 650 Spark, a maritime variant of Elbit's well-known Hermes drone family, is meant to serve as the operational backbone of the concept.

In numerical terms, the gap between the proposed solution and a classic aircraft carrier is enormous. A US Nimitz-class carrier, for example, costs tens of billions of dollars and requires a crew of thousands. A floating drone platform, by contrast, could be based on an existing civilian ship with relatively modest modifications.

Is the idea actually operationally viable?

Beyond the cost savings, open questions remain. Converting a civilian cargo ship into a military launch platform requires changes to its structure, power and communications systems, and physical and cyber security. A commercial vessel was not originally built to carry this kind of operational load, and it is still unclear what structural changes would be needed to meet safety standards and handle the operating strain of nine to twelve aircraft at once. Elbit has not yet published a timeline for operational deployment or details on the actual conversion cost, so at this stage this remains a demonstration concept rather than an approved installation plan.

Drone swarm defense is advancing in parallel

Elbit's maritime concept did not emerge in a vacuum. It comes against the backdrop of a broader trend in Israel's defense industry, which is simultaneously investing in solutions to defend against drone and swarm attacks. Israel Aerospace Industries recently unveiled a system called Hypnosis, designed to disrupt swarm drones that rely on satellite navigation. Together, Elbit and IAI illustrate how Israel's defense industry is attacking the drone issue from two directions at once: as a cheap offensive lever for maritime deployment, and as a threat that must be defended against.

It's hard not to be impressed by the ability of Elbit's engineers to think outside the box when it comes to cheap, practical solutions to traditionally expensive problems like aircraft carriers, even though the idea still needs to prove itself in the field and not just on paper.
