Wingtra Launches New Survey Drone That Sidesteps Flight-Over-People Permits

Wingtra launched its WingtraRAY survey drone today, July 10, 2025, with sales beginning immediately in select countries and rolling out globally starting in October. The drone, successor to the long-running WingtraOne series, was designed specifically to meet FAA requirements for flying over people without needing a special waiver.

A successor to a flagship model that's been with the company for nearly a decade

WingtraOne has served as Wingtra's core survey platform since 2017 and is considered one of the most popular mapping drones in the fixed-wing VTOL category. The company hinted at a next-generation model as early as mid-2024, but only now, roughly a year later, has the actual product reached the market. That gap between announcement and launch says a lot about how complex it is to develop a drone that meets new regulatory requirements from the US Federal Aviation Administration, not just an upgraded technical spec sheet.

Higher speed and a 61-megapixel full-frame camera

The core upgrade in the WingtraRAY combines a higher flight speed with a larger, more sensitive image sensor, a pairing meant to shorten actual time spent working in the field.

  • Maximum flight speed: 22 meters per second
  • Camera resolution: 61-megapixel full-frame sensor
  • Claimed advantage: less image overlap required, meaning fewer flight passes to cover the same area

Fewer flight passes mean less time in the air and fewer batteries to swap out on-site, which should translate directly into time savings for survey crews in the field.

Exemption from flight-over-people permits as a key competitive edge

Beyond the technical specs, the regulatory angle may be the real story behind this launch. Wingtra designed the WingtraRAY from the ground up to meet FAA Operations Over People requirements without needing a separate special waiver. Until now, surveys in populated areas or near structures often required special approval, a process that could delay projects by weeks or even months. If the exemption holds up as broadly as the company claims, it represents a tangible competitive advantage over rival survey drones that require additional bureaucracy before every urban flight. Still, it's worth asking how well this exemption will hold up against local authorities and countries outside the US, where the company's global launch isn't planned until October.

What does a 100-hectare survey job look like in under two hours?

Wingtra presented a sample work scenario that illustrates the product's commercial target: speed of delivery to the customer, not just in-flight performance.

  • Setting up the flight site: a quick process in the field
  • Flight time to cover 100 hectares (about 250 dunams): roughly ten minutes
  • Time until processed data is delivered to the customer: about two hours

If these figures hold up under real field conditions and not just in the company's controlled demonstrations, it represents a dramatic shortening of the workflow for customers in construction, mining, and infrastructure, where time is literally money.

Staggered availability and open questions about pricing

In its first phase, the WingtraRAY is available only in select countries, with a global launch planned for October 2025. The fact sheet the company published didn't include pricing details, leaving a major open question for surveyors and mapping firms considering a switch from WingtraOne. In the industrial drone sector, higher speed and resolution usually come with a higher price tag, and until official figures are released, it's hard to judge whether the time savings in the field will justify the upfront investment for small and mid-sized survey companies.
