Nets, Lasers and Shotguns: How the IDF Is Building a Wall Against Hezbollah's Drones

The IDF and the Ministry of Defense are deploying a multi-layered defense system against Hezbollah's attack FPV drones, combining physical nets, dynamic smoke clouds, high-power microwave weapons, interceptor lasers and pump-action shotguns. According to a Jerusalem Post report from May 28, 2026, the approach is shifting from frequency-based detection to optical and acoustic sensors powered by artificial intelligence.

From frequency detection to optical and acoustic sensing

Until now, defense against attack drones has relied mainly on intercepting the communication signals between a drone and its operator. But Hezbollah, like other hostile actors in the region, has gradually moved to FPV drones that fly on shifting frequency bands or even without continuous radio contact, making early detection based solely on frequency far more difficult. The IDF's response is to combine optical and acoustic sensors that identify a drone by its shape and sound, paired with algorithms that filter out background noise and alert soldiers in the field in real time.

From fishing nets to microwave cannons: what's in the toolkit

This isn't a single solution but an entire web of measures, each suited to a different operational situation, from a tank moving through open terrain to an infantry soldier fighting in an urban building. Some of these tools have already been distributed in the field, while others are still in procurement and integration stages.

  • Capture nets: mounted on tanks, armored vehicles and structures, physically trapping drones before impact
  • Dynamic smoke: a smoke screen that hides infantry and vehicle movement from drone operators' view
  • High-power microwave (HPM) weapons: burn out the attacking drone's electrical circuits from a distance
  • Interceptor lasers: destroy drones or blind their camera lenses
  • AI-based smart trigger mechanisms: help soldiers aim light weapons more accurately at fast-moving targets
  • Autonomous interceptor drones: deploy physical nets in the air to capture hostile drones
  • Pump-action shotguns: recently procured, firing pellet clouds at fast-moving quadcopters

A dedicated role for every company, inspired by Ukraine

Beyond the equipment itself, the IDF is making an organizational change: creating a dedicated short-range air defense fighter role in every infantry company and every tank crew. The model explicitly echoes patterns adopted by the Ukrainian army, where every small unit was required to develop self-defense capability against cheap but lethal FPV drones. The logic is similar: you can't rely solely on expensive centralized systems when the threat arrives in waves of dozens of cheap drones at once.

Who's behind the effort and who's funding it

Responsibility for the project is split between command and policy officials. Brigadier General Rami Abu Dahram, head of the IDF's Anti-Tank Warfare Headquarters, is leading the procurement of the nets. Major General (Res.) Amir Baram, Director General of the Ministry of Defense, is shaping overall policy. Defense Minister Israel Katz approved a dedicated budget for the effort, and according to reports, hundreds of anti-FPV kits have already been distributed to units in the field, each kit tailored to the mobility and operational profile of the receiving unit.

Will this mix of tools actually stop the wave?

The central question isn't technological but logistical: can all relevant units be equipped fast enough to keep pace with Hezbollah's upgrading of its FPV capabilities. The sheer variety of solutions, from nets to microwaves, suggests the IDF still hasn't found a single answer that covers every scenario, forcing it to deploy parallel layers instead. It's expensive and organizationally cumbersome, but against a threat that evolves every few months, this is probably the only reality currently available.
